When Trust Breaks
Last weekend, the lottery jackpot in Hong Kong went over 20 million 💰💰💰. There were 3.5 winning tickets. One of them — the “0.5” ticket worth roughly 3 million 💰 — was shared among 15 colleagues from the Food and Environmental Department. But the ticket holder, a 36-year-old man, refused to divide the winnings equally. His colleagues ended up going to the police to report theft 💸.
What caught my attention wasn’t the money, but how different people in Hong Kong seem now compared to the Hong Kong I grew up knowing. We used to trust each other. If we pooled money for a ticket, we shared the winnings — simple, honest, fair. But this new “generation” feels similar to what I see in Mauritius: greedy, selfish, lazy. It’s heartbreaking to witness this shift.
I wish Hong Kong could remain united the way it once was. Even though many of us have left that beautiful city, our hearts never did. I’m trying my best to donate to children born with illnesses — it’s my dad’s money I’m paying forward, and I want to help where I can.
I just hope this 36-year-old man will do the right thing: share what he promised with his colleagues. And I hope all the winners use their money wisely — to help those who are less fortunate, those who were born sick. That, to me, is the philosophy of a truly happy and meaningful rich life.
