Ginger’s Midnight Call
Yesterday I took Ginger and Cross out for a walk. There were many stray dogs along the way. Cross looked curious, but I would rather chase the dogs away than let him get close to them. After watching so many dog‑attack news in HK, it’s better to play safe than sorry.
We came back before 18:00. I fed them dinner, then went back to work. They looked like they wanted to go out for 💧︎ or 💩, so I let them out. An hour later, Ginger returned, but there was no sign of Cross. I thought he might have gone to check on the stray dogs, so I waited. But by 20:30, still nothing.
I went out to look for him. Ginger accompanied me. No luck. I waited another half hour and went again. Still nothing. I could tell Ginger was worried too. So I grabbed a towel and we went out a third time, heading to the neighbour’s place where they were once stuck behind the water tank and corner wall. I searched everywhere — no Cross. I was so worried, but there was nothing more I could do.
I came home with Ginger, and she looked exhausted. It was very windy last night, and that scared me even more. Was Cross hurt somewhere? Attacked by stray dogs? Taken by someone? My mind kept spinning with questions, none of which helped me calm down.
I was chatting with Andy at the same time. He was free last night, and we talked about different things, but my mind never left Cross. I went to bed before 03:00. Woke up at 04:00, turned off YouTube, tried to sleep again. But Ginger called for me. She kept meowing outside my door.
I told her I needed to sleep and that we would look for Cross together tomorrow. I checked on her, but she signaled me to open the sliding door. I told her it was late and I was tired. I went back upstairs, but she scratched me and insisted I go downstairs. She didn’t stop meowing. Eventually I had to get up again to calm her.
I thought maybe she really wanted to go out, so I opened the sliding door. She pushed me slightly — it felt like she wanted me to go out and look for Cross. But I wasn’t wearing anything, feeling cold, tired, and still worried. I opened the door again for her. She stepped out halfway, then meowed — and I heard a familiar voice from the direction of the bin wall.
Cross jumped down from the wall and ran toward us. I couldn’t be happier to see him unharmed. He was starving and went straight to the food bowl. I hugged him tightly before he ate. Then I went to Ginger to thank her. I don’t know how she knew Cross was near. I checked the CCTV — he hadn’t come back before that moment.
I went back to bed and thanked God for bringing Cross back to me. I’m beginning to worry more about traveling back to HK. I hope they will be here when I return. I hope they will see Christophe as a friend and trust him the way they trust me.
Ginger is not just any cat you find on the street. She is a good mother and a wonderful companion. I don’t know how much she understands me, but I feel okay knowing she will be here when I travel. It’s Cross I worry about — when he doesn’t see me, I hope he won’t wander far to look for me. I’m praying to God to help them understand that I’ll be away for a while. And I’m praying for Aunt Fifi’s Ginger to return to her life. Losing Cross for a few hours nearly killed me. I can’t imagine Aunt Fifi losing her Ginger for over a month. I truly hope her Ginger comes home soon.
Eventually I went back to bed after 05:00. I let myself sleep in, knowing they were safe. And yes, I knew the living room would be a mess when I went downstairs this morning — but I would rather clean up their chaos than worry about their whereabouts.
