Cat's fight

When I was a kid, we used to have two cats — June and Timmy. June looked very similar to my aunt’s cat, Mo. My aunt lived next door, and one day we thought Mo had wandered out and gotten locked outside. So we brought the cat into our apartment and waited for my aunt to come home. It turned out Mo was actually inside her place the whole time. The cat we found was a stray from nowhere.

We begged our mom to let us keep him. We named him June — not because of the month, but because we found him a little silly. We called him 蠢蠢, and the Cantonese pronunciation of 蠢 sounds similar to “June,” so that became his name too.

A couple of years later, my brother found a tiny kitten during a school outdoor activity. It was so small and fragile that we wished with all our hearts it would survive and live happily. We named him (天)主保(佑), and in English we called him Timmy.

Timmy was very close to me when he was a kitten. I always petted him and prepared his food. He used to sit on my shoulder until he grew too big — then he sat on my back instead.

I don’t recall June and Timmy ever fighting. Those two boys were always calm with each other. But here with Ginger, she always ends up fighting with Leeloo. I guess this is a female-cat thing — they just can’t help themselves. Seeing Ginger lose patches of fur on her tiny head breaks my heart. I’ve told her so many times not to fight with Leeloo, especially since Leeloo is much bigger than she is.

And now, after Ginger’s surgery, I worry even more. I’m afraid she might break her stitches or get an infection. Last night, just as I was about to go to bed, I heard her growling loudly. I went downstairs to look for her, and it was raining heavily outside. I was so worried. After drying her off, I put some Betadine on her wound. Of course she hated it, but it was the only thing I could do to protect her.

As soon as the rain stopped, the first thing on Ginger’s mind was going back out. I’m not sure if she was looking for another fight, but this morning I found another patch of fur missing from her neck. I wonder what I can do to stop her from fighting with Leeloo again.
